History of French Football League: Ligue 1

Ligue 1 is a French men’s professional football national league. Until 1919, there were no professional football organizations or competitions. French Football Federation put forth the idea of a national football league in 1930. Georges Bayrou, Emmanuel Gambardella, and Gabriel Hanot are considered the pioneers of bringing professionalism to French Football.

It wasn’t until 1932 the first season of Ligue 1 was played. The French league's name then was ‘Division Nationale’. It wasn’t until as recently as 2002 that the league was renamed again to its current name, ‘Ligue 1’. For sponsorship reasons, the French professional football league is called ‘Ligue 1 Uber Eats’.

Division Nationale was terminated by the French government and Ligue de Football Professionnel during the second world war. For six years, the clubs only played regional matches due to the suspension of professional football.
